In pursuance of the Danish Constitutional Act, a binding referendum is in certain situations required to be held on a bill passed by the Danish Parliament. Furthermore, legislation may provide that an indicative referendum be held on a specific subject. Any person who is eligible to vote in a general election may vote in a referendum.
Who can vote?
In order to vote in a national referendum, a person must be eligible to vote in a general election and be entered in the electoral register.
People resident in the Faroe Islands or Greenland are not, however, eligible to vote in a referendum on EU issues because the Faroe Islands and Greenland are not members of the EU.
The most recent referendum was held on Sunday, 7 June 2009, on the same day as the European Parliament elections in Denmark.
